HRM Programs And Services For Canada Day

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments for Canada Day.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services
Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday service on Canada Day, Thursday, July 1.

The Alderney Ferry service will operate on an amended schedule on Thursday July 1st, which will include 15 minute service between 10:15 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. There will be no Woodside ferry service on Canada Day. For detailed holiday schedules visit https://www.halifax.ca/transportation/halifax-transit/routes-schedules/holiday-schedules.

Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours
No municipal solid waste collection services will take place on Canada Day, Thursday, July 1. Curbside collection of garbage and organics scheduled for Thursday, July 1 will instead occur the following Saturday, July 3.

Curbside collection of recyclables normally scheduled for Thursday, July 1 will instead occur the following Saturday, July 3 for some areas of the municipality such as Dartmouth (central downtown) and Bedford. Collection for residents in the Clayton Park, Rockingham and Lower Sackville areas will take place the following Thursday, July 8. This is due to a new bi-weekly recycling collection schedule being implemented at the same time. Residents in all communities can view their new collection schedule at www.halifax.ca/recycle.

Residents are reminded that collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m.; to ensure pick-up, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day.

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax recycling facility and municipal composting facilities will be closed Thursday, July 1 but will be reopen for regular service on Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services
Municipal beaches will be open for the summer season on July 1.

Municipal splashpads and pools are open. The Bedford Outdoor Pool and Halifax Common splash pad will open July 1. Due to ongoing renovation work, the Cole Harbour outdoor pool and splash pad will delay opening until mid-July. The Halifax Common Pool remains closed at this time. The pool is being assessed to determine the work required to be able to reopen. More information will follow Please note: Due to ongoing public health restrictions, swim times must be booked in advance for all indoor and outdoor pools at www.halifax.ca/myrec.

Emera Oval – Equipment lending will be open 11 a.m.- 9 p.m. Equipment lending will be available if weather and surface conditions permit.

Residents are reminded they may continue to use REC at Home which offers a variety of activities that you can enjoy with your family – from arts and crafts, to at-home workouts.

Parking
On-street metered parking spaces are free on Canada Day, Thursday, July 1, however, motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage such as accessible parking, fire hydrants and no-stopping.

Customer Contact Centres
The 311 Contact Centre will be operating on regular hours on Thursday, July 1 (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.). The two Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Thursday, July 1, and will reopen for regular business hours on Friday, July 2.

Civic Events
Traditional Canada Day events were not planned as a result of COVID-19 public health restrictions. We encourage residents to use this day to reflect on our shared history and collectively recommit to a stronger future built upon meaningful reconciliation efforts with Indigenous peoples.

The municipality will continue to support Bedford Days programming that will focus on local history including Mi’kmaq culture and heritage.
