Denials by Justice Minister on Waterville Youth Facility

Justice Minister Diana Whalen says there is not a problem with staffing levels or overcrowding at the Waterville Youth Facility despite a claim by the NSGEU following last weekend’s riot. Four staff members were taken to hospital with minor injuries along with one of four youths who attacked the staff.

Whalen says she is concerned about Sunday evening’s incident and her department is investigating. She has directed her staff to look at training levels and operations of the faciulity’s health and safety committee.

Jason MacLean, president of the NSGEU said staff at the Waterville facility should not fear for their lives when they go to work.
