Fundy Tidal Turbine Waiting for a Lift in Saint John, NB.

The future of Bay of Fundy tidal power may be sitting on a barge in Saint John – but no one can lift it. Cape Sharp Tidal’s massive 320 metric ton turbine designed to capture the tidal power of the Bay of Fundy is currently sitting on a barge in Saint John harbour. It arrived on a the specially designed barge from Halifax nearly three weeks ago and needs to be hoisted off the barge for repairs. However, Port Saint John lacks a pier or berth with the structural capacity to support a crane large enough to lift the turbine. The joint venture by Nova Scotia’s Power parent company, Emera, and an Irish firm is now requesting permission from the Federal government to bring in a non-Canadian ship with enough lifting capacity. The turbine will eventually be deployed in the Minas Basin.
