Ocean canyons off NS protected

Two areas off southwest Nova Scotia have been closed to fishing gear that is dragged or dumped on the ocean floor. It’s to protect deep-sea corals in the areas known as the Corsair and Georges Canyons as well as the Jordan Basin, west of Yarmouth.

Fishermen in the area are banned from using lobster or crab traps, anchored gill nets and other gear.  Only a small number of fishermen will be affected.
