Military personal taking part in a NATO exercise off the coast of Nova Scotia helped rescue a local fisherman on Saturday. A call reporting a 24-year-old fishermen in medical distress came in to Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. The man was on a fishing vessel roughly 160 kilometers southwest of Halifax, near where the anti-submarine NATO exercise was taking place. A doctor from the British HMS Monmouth was sent over to the vessel and it was determined the he couldn’t wait for a helicopter from Greenwood to arrive. Instead, a helicopter from the US Navy’s Robert E. Peary took the man to the Stanfield International Airport where he was taken by ambulance to the QEII hospital. The man’s current condition is not known.
