HRM DAY OF PEACE

August 6, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Halifax Regional Municipality has declared August 6, 2020, as a Day of Peace to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the only use of nuclear bombs on people at the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, August 6 and 9, 1945.

HRM Council has also passed a motion to support the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) Cities Appeal, which includes a letter by Mayor Savage to Prime Minister Trudeau urging the federal government to sign and ratify the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace (NSVOW) and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War Canada (IPPNWC) are celebrating this declaration with a ceremony at the Grand Parade in Halifax, starting at 11:00, which culminates with a moment of silence and bell ringing at noon 75 times.

Speakers include Deputy Mayor Lisa Blackburn, Councillor Richard Zurawski, Dr Nancy Covington, and Kanayo and Thomas Trappenberg. Also featured will be the All Nations Drum Group, peace songs by Sandy Greenberg and laying of peace wreaths at the Cenotaph.

NSVOW and IPPNWC would like to invite the public to join us at the Grand Parade. Please wear a mask and observe social distancing. There is also the option of joining online at https://www.facebook.com/NSVOW on August 6, starting at 11:00 a.m.
